3 Safety Tips to Follow in Schools during COVID-19

COVID-19 is one of the biggest health concerns the world has experienced in decades. Unfortunately, India is one of the worst affected countries in the world with nearly 89.5 lakh cases and more than 1.3 lakh deaths. However, the country is now unlocking all services and institutions as the economic slump and slowdown has leveraged the government to gradually resume all commercial, educational, and transport facilities.

As per the Unlock 5.0 guidelines, the government has allowed school authorities to resume in-person classes. However, schools are potential pathogen zones and it is pivotal for the authorities to ensure safety of the students as well as that of the school staff. After all, the new normal is all about preventions and safety.

Here are some important safety tips that all schools should follow as they reopen during the pandemic:

1. Follow physical distancing

Social distancing is unarguably one of the most important precautionary measures that people should follow, be it in school or in any other public place. It reduces the chances of virus transmission and spread of the disease. Some ways of ensuring physical distancing in schools include:

  • Students should be seated in a classroom at a minimum distance of 6 feet or 2 meters from each other.
  • Try to create one-way traffic in hallways.
  • Reducing the number of children in school buses.
  • Install physical barriers like glass shields and partitions wherever necessary.
  • School authorities and teaching faculty must also encourage students to not form groups and avoid unnecessary interactions. Students should be guided to maintain a safe distance from one another.

    2. Make wearing masks compulsory

Wearing masks should be made compulsory for each and every person in the school. Just like social distancing, wearing masks is a crucial precautionary measure that everyone must adhere to. Masks act as barriers and stop the respiratory droplets from catching other people. Teachers and other senior members should preferably wear N95 masks, not only for their own safety but also for the safety of the students. School authorities can decide on Safekind N95 masks as they are carefully designed to ensure safety and comfort simultaneously.

    3. Clean and disinfect regularly

School authorities must ensure that classrooms and all other facilities are regularly cleaned and disinfected. Desks, chairs, labs, etc. are all potentially prone to the build-up of pathogens and may put the safety of the students at risk. Moreover, teachers must also encourage students to wash or clean their hands frequently. In fact, school authorities should ideally distribute sanitizers and face masks to all the students.

COVID-19 is a dangerous disease and students share a significant risk of infection, given their vulnerable immunity. Therefore, school authorities must make sure that the temperature of every student is checked at the point of entry and all sick students stay at home.
