All You Need To Know About Usage, Disposal and Reusing Of Masks

In the wake of the pandemic, we are all bound to wear masks and wash our hands with soap and water or sanitize them with a hand sanitizer at regular intervals. These are the necessary precautions that we have to consider for protecting ourselves from viral infections, highly prevailing in the environment. Various guidelines were also issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) emphasising the following factors to stay safe from infections.

    Usage of Masks

  • Cloth masks- It is ideal for routine use. However, these masks are not very efficient to filter micro particles. But, it is a better option than wearing no mask at all.
  • N95 respirators- These are the most effective masks that filter around 95% of micro particles. They are efficient to trap viruses up to 0.3 microns in size. Furthermore, N95 respirators are beneficial for doctors, front line staff, etc. Many people consider this mask to stay free from infections.
  • Disposal of Masks

  • Cloth masks- These should be washed thoroughly and regularly with soap and water to clear the germs successfully.
  • N95 respirators- There is a set procedure for removing and discarding this type of mask. You have to hold the edges of the straps of the respirator to remove them without getting in contact with the microbes. After that, place the mask in the polythene bag or a ziplock to secure it tightly. Remember that N95 masks must be immediately discarded if there is mucus, respiratory droplets visible on their surface.
  • Reuse of Masks

  • Cloth masks- Ideally, it is not recommended to reuse the masks. However, you can use them a few times after washing and disinfecting them safely.
  • N95 Respirators- Unlike cloth masks, these respirators can be reused multiple times if stored securely when not in use. You can keep them in clean and dry plastic containers.
